SAITO, K. and NAKANUMA, Y. Lectin Binding of Intrahepatic Bile Ducts and Peribiliary Glands in Normal Livers and Hepatolithiasis. Tohoku J. Exp. Med., 1990, 160 (1), 81-92 Histochemical features of the intrahepatic bile ducts and peribiliary glands were examined with five biotinylated lectins in 12 normal human livers and 12 livers with hepatolithiasis. There was a marked proliferation of peribiliary glands, especially mucous cells, in the stone-containing bile ducts. Based on the carbohydrate binding specificity for each lectin, it was found in both the normal and hepatolithiasis livers, that N-acetylglucosamine, Nacetylgalactosamine, D-galactose and L-fucose were abundant in the mucous acinar cells of the intrahepatic peribiliary glands, and mannose (or glucose) was present exclusively in the serous acinar cells and surface lining epithelium. Considerable case to case and cell to cell variations, however, were noted in the expression of lectin binding activity. It has been shown that major monosaccharide components of biliary glycoproteins are N-acetylglucosamine, galactose and fucose. All of these carbohydrates were detected in the peribiliary glands, especially mucous acinar cells, in this study. Therefore, the peribiliary mucous cells are mainly responsible for the secretion of the glycoproteins with these carbohydrates into the hepatic bile, and may play a role in the calculi formation in the intrahepatic biliary tree. lectin histochemistry ; hepatolithiasis ; peribiliary glands

Pure Laparoscopic Left Hemihepatectomy for Hepatic Peribiliary Cysts with Biliary Intraepithelial Neoplasia
Introduction. Hepatic peribiliary cysts (HPCs) usually originate due to the cystic dilatation of the intrahepatic extramural peribiliary glands. We describe our rare experience of pure laparoscopic left hemihepatectomy (PLLH) in a patient with HPCs accompanied by a component of biliary intraepithelial neoplasia (BilIN). Case Presentation. A 65-year-old man was referred for further investigation...

The biliary tree consists of intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts and is lined by biliary epithelial cells (or cholangiocytes). There are also peribiliary glands around the intrahepatic large bile ducts and extrahepatic bile ducts. The biliary tree is a conduit of bile secreted by hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells and also of the peribiliary glands and has several physiological roles...
متن کاملCystic and Papillary Neoplasm at the Hepatic Hilum Possibly Originating in the Peribiliary Glands
Cystic neoplasms of the liver are divided into two types: mucinous cystic neoplasm and cystic intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct. We herein report two cases of cystic and papillary neoplasm of the liver which differed from the abovementioned types. Case 1. A 70-year-old man. Radiologically, a cystic tumor measuring 20 mm in diameter was found at the hepatic hilum. Right hepatectom...

The biliary tree system consists of two divisions: intrahepatic bile ducts and extrahepatic bile ducts. The development of the biliary tree, and secondarily the liver, shares a common origin with ventral pancreas. A common progenitor for liver, biliary duct system, and ventral pancreas exists at early stages of development, when the anterior definitive endoderm is forming the foregut. Several s...
متن کاملHepatolithiasis associated with intrahepatic heterotopic pancreas: a case report and literature review
UNLABELLED Intrahepatic heterotopic pancreas is rarely reported in the literature. Here, we report a case of a 39-year-old male with intrahepatic heterotopic pancreas associated with primary cholesterol hepatolithiasis. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed multiple cholesterol stones in intrahepatic bile ducts of the left lobe concomitant with intrahepatic cholangiectases. These observations...
